HOT TIPS:

  • For all occupations, it is important to get contacts in the industry. Talk to people whenever you get an opportunity, get work experience and take notice of what is happening if you visit.

 DANCE TEACHER

A dance teacher may teach in their area of specialisation in private dance studios, or they may own and run their own dancing schools.
Dancers with appropriate qualifications can teach in secondary schools or tertiary institutions.

Starting Out:

  • Start by taking dance lessons, practicing and asking your own teacher about opportunities to be involved in assisting with classes for younger students.

  • Perform whenever you have the opportunity so you gain confidence and practice on your friends by teaching them basic steps and routines to your favourite music.

WAITRESS

Waitressing is something you can start as a part-time job and turn into a career in the hospitality, and/or food and beverage industry. It can vary a lot from your waitressing in your local café to silver service at a 5 star Hotel or restaurant.

Starting Out:

  • Practice carrying plates from the dinner table at home!
    Take notice of the service that you get when you go out. Think about what is good and what isn't so you can put the good things into practice

  • Ask local cafes or restaurants, where you would like to work, if they have any positions available. Take your resume and be ready to complete an application form.

Courses:

  • There are many private colleges and hotel schools that offer a variety of training and job prospects.

  • TAFE: a variety of courses are on offer, e.g. Certificate II in Hospitality (many locations) For more information go to: www.tafensw.nsw.edu.au

  • In many cases there is often on-the-job training as well

Starting Out:

  • Start by arranging your own flowers and taking photos of your arrangements. Use flowers from your own garden or go to the markets where you can buy them more cheaply.

  • Employers love to see a great portfolio with examples of your work and something that demonstrates your interest and commitment.

  • You could also start a journal with pictures of flowers and research about their name etc.

Community Colleges: Check out your local community college. Many offer short courses in floristry and floral art.

MOVIE THEATRE INDUSTRY

  • There are SO MANY occupations in this industry and skills that you can use.

  • Start by having a look at the link and see what takes your interest. Examples of occupations include: dancer, make up artist, hairdresser, producer, script writer, camera crew, caterer, prop & set designers, special effects specialists. The list goes on!!!

Starting Out:

  • Create a journal or portfolio of your designs and creations. Build on this as time goes on.
    You could also collect pictures and articles about relevant topics.

Courses:

  • NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) has many courses in the arts and theatre industry www.nida.edu.au

  • Courses such as fashion design at university or TAFE could start you in the right direction. Do a search for the courses that are available.



 TV star/ actress

Starting Out:

  • Extra for advertisements etc

  • Perform in local/ school productions

  • Create your own short movies/ clips

  • Submit your work into competitions e.g.

  • Get your name and face and talent out there!

  • Sign up for workshops after school or in the holidays e.g. ATYP (Australian Theatre for Young People) or NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) have heaps of great courses. For more info go to: www.atyp.com.au or www.nida.edu.au

  • There are also many courses at university or TAFE that could start you in the right direction. Do a search for the courses that are available, depending on your interests.



Hairdresser

Starting Out:

  • Get some work experience in a salon

  • Be prepared to put in some hard work sweeping floors, making coffee and folding foils

  • Get a part time job in a salon

  • Practice styling the hair of friends and family members including blow drying, straightening and upstyles.

  • Presentation is very important in this industry. If going to a job or work experience take time to make sure your hair looks nice (neat & no major re-growth!) and your clothes are suitable (pants, shirt & comfy shoes - with a closed toe).

  • You can find a salon in your area by going to: www.hairsalons.com.au
    Before lining up work experience, check out the salon and make sure it is a place that you feel comfortable working at.

Courses:

  • Courses are most commonly run through TAFE

  • Private colleges also offer courses, usually at a greater cost. E.g. Toni and Guy see: www.toniandguy.com.au/courses.html

  • Unlike many other industries, most hairdressing courses require students to have a job in a hairdressing salon before starting the course and an apprenticeship is taken up.
